Sissi’s visits
to Merano

Today’s Villa Bavaria, our hotel in Merano and environs, was built as residential home in 1884. Carl Theodor, Duke of Bavaria, and his entourage were the first residents. The Duke was a passionate ophthalmologist and practised in his quarters and later in the adjacent building of the Pension Petersburg and the Merano clinic. A bust in the Art Noveau Wandelhalle on the banks of the Passer River still reminds of him as one of the most prestigious doctors of Merano. Carl Theodor was the favourite brother of Empress Sissi, who spent many a day in Merano. Many traces in the Villa Bavaria and in the whole town of Merano remind us of these two famous guests. A portrait of Duke Carl Theodor can be admired in the lobby of Villa Bavaria.

Duchess Elisabeth Amelie Eugenie in Bavaria was born in 1837 in Munich. She came from the royal Bavarian House of Wittelsbach and married Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria at the age of 16, thus becoming Empress of Austria. Her stays in Merano promoted the fame of the place as a spa town.

Empress Sissi’s presence contributed to the touristic upswing of Merano/Meran, as she stayed here on various occasions with her entourage. During her stays she visited the Kurhaus nearly every day. A larger-than-life sculpture of the Empress in the Sissi Park on the summer promenade and the Sissi’s Path still remind us of her preference for Merano.

The Sissi Path leads past 11 stations, which were visited by the Empress during her various stays in Merano / Meran. It connects the Gardens Of Trauttmansdorff Castle with the city centre of Merano directly passing Villa Bavaria. On your way you will see many historic sights and enjoy great views.
